“Coppelia” /in French Coppélia/, the full title “Coppelia or the Girl with Enamel Eyes”, is a comic ballet with an original libretto based on the story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, written by Charles Nuitter and Arthur Saint-Leon, who created the first scenography as well. The plot tells the story of the love of Franz for Coppelia, the unfamiliar girl who every morning comes out on the balcony of the strange Doctor Coppelius. The girl is actually a mechanical doll in a human size, which can move and dance. The doctor devises through magic to take out the soul of the boy in order to turn Coppelia into a living creature, but the fiancée of Franz Swanhilda and her friends manage to hinder his devilish plan. The premiere spectacles are dedicated to the 125 Years since the birth of the founder of the Bulgarian ballet Anastas Petrov. Coppelia and 60 years creative work of the great Italian artist Salvatore Russo, 25 of which are on the Bulgarian opera and ballet stage.
