REINHARDT – VLADIGEROV. Mutual Interactions and Projections
Exhibition dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Pancho Vladigerov’s birth
90 YEARS DIMITAR DIMITROV
Exhibition dedicated to the founder of FOBA
The exhibition “Reinhardt – Vladigerov. Mutual Interactions and Projections” presents a little known period in the creative biography of Pancho Vladigerov. From 1920 to 1932, Vladigerov worked in a creative tandem with the famous German director Max Reinhardt at his theaters in Berlin and Vienna as a composer and music director.
The present exhibition tells about the creative cooperation in the cultural context of the atmosphere in Berlin and Sofia in the 20s of the last century. The transcription manuscripts of the music for the spectacles by Reinhardt, the programs and posters, collected and carefully preserved by Vladigerov and his family, are evidence of that time and its projections in the musical and theatrical arts in Bulgaria. They are the only proofs in the European and world scale of the long-time work by Vladigerov in this creative tandem. The rise of fascism, war and the distance in time erased the traces.
The exhibition tells about the influence of the new modern art in Germany and Austria during the 20s of 20th century, which quickly penetrated into Bulgaria too. Composer Pancho Vladigerov and director Hrisan Tsankov – specializing at Reinhardt’s theaters, artist Ivan Penkov and conductor Kosta Todorov – German disciples too, united their efforts for the production of “The Chalk Circle” by Clabund on the stage of the People’s Theater and presented the new tendencies in art. They had changeable success regarding the conservative aesthetic taste, but even then, the critics unanimously highly assessed the music of Vladigerov. The talent of the Maestro, in combination with his professionalism, the breadth of his outlook, the European dimension, are a guarantee for the effect of his music both now and then.
