“The Sleeping Beauty”, together with “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker”, is one of the highest achievements of the classical ballet art. In them are presented the scenic dramaturgy, musical symphonism and virtuosity of dance. “The Sleeping Beauty” is the culmination in the creative co-work of Tchaikovsky and Petipa. The bright and romantic music is magnificently re-created in movement.
The artistic director of the ballet troupe in Stara Zagora Silvya Tomova defines “The Sleeping Beauty” as the ballet of ballets. The action takes the audience to the 17th century of Louis XIV – one of the founders of the ballet art. This was a time, marked by magical brilliance, full of arts, music, literature, fashion and spare time for pleasure. In the production, during the court ball scenes, there appear characters from fairy tales by Charles Perrault – Blue Bird, Puss in Boots, the Little Red Riding Hood. The action is transferred to the Usse Castle, the valley of Loire and the Sleeping Forest with Aurora (the dawn) and Prince Desire (desire). The audience meets the opposing elements in the world – the bearers of good – Lilac Fairy (the violet flame) and evil (Carabosse Fairy).
Choreographer Andrei Bossov preserves the original choreography in the style of Petipa, regardless of some necessary contractions in the scenes of the spectacle. He is convinced that “The Sleeping Beauty” will have a long life in Stara Zagora.
After over a 30-year-long interruption, the tradition of performing classical ballet titles with live accompaniment by an orchestra is resurrected. For conductor Vladimir Boshnakov, the realization of “The Sleeping Beauty” is a dream come true. The magic world of Charles Perrault and the genius music of Tchaikovsky bring pleasure and delight to the creative process.
Scenographer Ivan Tokadzhiev used the purely pictorial scenography, the so-called “soft décor”. It helps the re-creation of the different places in the action. The solution of the depictions is classical and with deep respect to the genius creators of the work.
The costumes by Mariya Blazheva follow the story-line of the spectacle, emphasizing the contrast between good and evil. Besides, they re-create the charm of the French Baroque, with its luxury and the presence of a fairy-tale atmosphere.
