The action takes place in the city of Augusta Traiana, ancient Beroe, now Stara Zagora, in 106 AD.  Meda, Orol’s daughter, priest of Sabazios, falls in love with Marcello – Praetorian, warrior of Rome. They are planning to elope to Corynth. Their deception is revealed by Orol, however, the three of them are captured by the Roman warriors. They are sentenced to be executed – Marcello for treason, Meda for apostasy, and Orol for being a fanatic.
A messenger announces the arrival of Emperor Trajan, who should publicly declare their destiny.
